Interesting as always – thanks. I remember reading… something, at some point (great references, there) which said humans are always prone to try to impose order on chaos, create patterns out of randomness, where usually there’s none to be found. It’s intriguing stuff.

This is an interesting concept. Ruin the moment before a moment can be ruined, so no one can ruin my moments anymore. I could then turn to my moment ruining nephew and say, “I’ll bet that’s the last moment you ruin!” The one problem with that is that it would cause chaos is his moment ruining mind, for his world, and his identity, are all wrapped up in ruining moments. He would lose this sense of the world, and his sense of identity, and he could end up in a crazy farm trying to come to grips with how I always ruined the moments he was set to ruin. Sorry, Jerome, but I don’t want to do that to my poor nephew.

Perhaps in seemingly dull moments in the future you can take the initiative and begin the unruly behavior. As your family looks at you stunned you can clap your hands and say ‘I am out baby!’. You will leave them with an unforgettable moment of their crazy uncle.

Early days, but I’m enjoying it so far. The first pass of chapter 1 didn’t yield a huge number of changes, probably because I rewrote that a few times before I moved to my ‘don’t edit at all while drafting’ approach. I know chapter 2 is going to need some brutal cropping – there are at least 1000 words of exposition in there that I’m sure I don’t need now.

Fun times!

Thanks Dan, how is the editing process going for you? Is it as grueling as the others you quoted in your blog described, or is it the labor of love for you that it was for me when I did my last novel? I think you hinted at that in one of your blogs, when you wrote about seeing all the ideas you came up with and how that was so exciting. Refresh my memory.
